This week, Texas Governor Greg Abbott appointed Dr. Salil Deshpande, chief medical officer, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Texas, to the Statewide Health Coordinating Council (SHCC). Dr. Deshpande and the other council members are responsible for ensuring health care services and facilities are available to all Texans.
The SHCC provides overall guidance in the development of the Texas State Health Plan, submits the plan to the governor and promotes implementation of the plan.
Dr. Deshpande is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, Texas Medical Association, Harris County Medical Society, and is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine.
He received a Bachelor of Arts in biological sciences from the University of Southern California, Doctor of Medicine from Baylor College of Medicine and a Masters of Business Administration in finance and health care management from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
